Service Position Title: LEAP Initiative Social/Emotional School Readiness Developmental Advocate

Service Position Summary:

AmeriCorps LEAP Initiative positions include direct service support to children and parents in early childhood programs as part of a team of advocates, coaches and champions for social/emotional school readiness. LEAP Members serve in the 20 county region of Southeastern Minnesota.

Essential Functions:

  • Building early childhood assets and social/emotional school readiness competencies by:
    • Working under the direction of the teacher in daily operations to support staff through researching and modeling best practices in mental health;
    • Leading individual, small group and large group activities with children, documenting children’s development through observation and implementing specific recommendations from mental health professionals;
    • Creating classroom materials that support children’s mental health;
    • Participating in ongoing assessments of children’s development.

  • Provide parent education on dialogic reading techniques to assist parents in building bonds with their children through reading.

  • Community outreach to build capacity and sustain early childhood programming by speaking to individuals and groups about the importance of early childhood development and encouraging involvement in the regional early childhood movement.

  • Building youth assets through service by identifying, organizing and completing a project(s) to be determined by the AmeriCorps member and local staff to increase awareness of early childhood programs in the community, increase awareness of the needs of young children, establish relationships between programs and individuals and provide opportunity for youth involvement in community service.

Qualifications:

  • At least two years post high school and have a desire to work with young children;
  • Display leadership skills, including but not limited to communication, organization, problem solving, dependability, commitment, and flexibility;
  • Self-motivated and able to work effectively independently as well as with a team;
  • Possess a non-judgmental attitude toward families living in poverty;
  • Prior experience with volunteerism;
  • Comfortable in serving as part of a team;
  • Meet AmeriCorps qualification criteria.

Requirements:

  • Must have mobility to interact with children;
  • Must pass background check, as required for working with children.
