Athletic Training

Athletic training is the allied health care field focused on the management of health care problems associated with sports participation. Athletic trainers work cooperatively with physicians, coaches, parents, physical therapists, chiropractors, and other allied health professionals to form the sports medicine team.

Through a combination of formal classroom and clinical instruction and clinical experience, the athletic trainer is prepared to provide health care within each of the following content areas:

  • risk management and injury prevention
  • acute care of injury and illness
  • orthopedic clinical examination and diagnosis
  • pharmacology
  • nutritional aspects of injury and illness
Athletic trainers are employed in a number of different settings including medical offices, professional sports teams, university and high school teams, physical therapy clinics, corporation fitness centers, health clubs, senior citizen centers, and city recreational facilities.
