Our Bachelor of Science in Communication Studies seeks to provide students with a foundation that is responsive to the distinctive emerging media culture of the 21st century and prepares them for a career in a wide range of fields, including cultural and civic affairs, government and public administration, health-related services, corporate communication, education, human resources, law, advertising, marketing, public relations, media, and publishing or advanced study in communication, business, political science, journalism, and law.
The Bachelor of Science in Communication degree program is designed to develop knowledge and skills for effective communication in a variety of public and private work environments. The program was created specifically to build upon personal and professional communication experiences. The degree enhances the communication skills necessary for the development of professional competence and values; critical thinking and problem solving; information utilization; and collaboration. The curriculum focuses on the development of core communication competencies. It emphasizes theory and application in the domains of interpersonal, small group, organizational, mass communication, culture, and communication technology.
Students can customize their internship experience to meet their career goals and build an outstanding resume. The Communication program requires one internship and affords the opportunity for an additional field experience. Internships are typically completed in the fall or spring of Senior year. Faculty members work with students to develop internship placements that support and develop their personal career goals. Interns may work in a variety of organizations, including non-profit groups, public relations and marketing teams, sports/wellness organizations, media outlets, healthcare offices, and more! Students interested in working in sports and wellness organizations typically add Exercise Science or Coaching minors. Students interested in working as part of a management team often choose a Management or Business Essentials minor. You can even choose a double major, with a combination of expertise to meet your goals. Interested in law school? Earn a Bachelor of Science in Communication and a Bachelor of Science in American Studies, and be law school ready! Thinking about running the membership for a large wellness facility?
