Alex Ferguson will be entering his
2nd season at Presentation College. The Saints finished the
2008 season with a 12-20 record (7-8) in conference and
missed the UMAC postseason by one game.
Ferguson is no stranger to baseball in
Aberdeen. He comes to Presentation after working in the
Northern State University (NSU) baseball program for the
past three years, the first two as a graduate assistant, the
third as an assistant coach.
Ferguson also worked for the highly
successful Aberdeen Smitty's American Legion and High School
baseball programs during the past three years. Ferguson
served as an assistant coach and helped lead the Smitty's to
South Dakota High School Championships in 2005 and 2007, as
well as back-to-back American Legion State Championship Game
appearances in 2005 and 2006. During his tenure with the
Smitty's, Ferguson’s teams played to an impressive 129-42
mark.
Prior to working in Aberdeen, Ferguson
spent two years as an instructor in the prestigious
Mac-N-Seitz baseball academy in Lenexa, Kansas. While there,
Ferguson worked for and learned from former Major League
Baseball players & owners Mike MacFarlane and Kevin Seitzer.
Ferguson holds a Bachelor’s degree in
sports management from Principia (Ill.) College and a
Master’s degree in health, physical education and coaching
from Northern State. Ferguson also played baseball on the
collegiate level while at Principia, garnering
All-Conference honors during two years of his career.

A native of Atwater, Minn., Downes is a 2007 graduate of
Northern State University.
During his college career, Downes spent one season at
Central Iowa Community College, where his team took second
place in the NJCAA World Series. Downes followed up with
four seasons at Northern State University, where he earned
numerous awards for his skills on the mound. In 2006 Downes
was chosen as an NSIC Player of the Week and named to the
All-Conference Honorable Mention team. In 2007 he was named
an NSIC All-Conference player.
Downes recently taught at Mobridge Junior High, where he
also coached basketball, wrestling and track. He coached the
Mobridge Teener baseball program to their first-ever state
tournament in 2007, where the team captured fourth place. In
March Downes also served as a temporary assistant coach for
Presentation during the team’s trip to Phoenix.
