Welcome to the on-line home of Recent Headlines: Saints lose 2nd conference home game in a row... 2/06 -- On Saturday afternoon, the Saints let a big second half rally by the College of St. Scholastica decide the outcome of UMAC game in the Strode Center. Despite being tied 25-25 at half, the visitors came out with 45 points in the second half to take the 70-46 win from the Saints. Cold-shooting and turnovers were the Saints achilles heel; 17-50 (34%) from the floor, 3-17 (18%) from the three point line, 9-16 (56%) from the line, and 22 turnovers compared to only four assists. Chelsey Stanley led PC with 11 points, and Becky Smith pitched in 10 points, 7 boards and 5 steals. The women (7-13 overall, 3-7 UMAC) return to action on Monday, February 8th as they head to Ankeny, IA to take on Faith Baptist College. Conference loss for Saints... 2/05 -- On Friday night the Saints fell victim to the visiting LumberJills from Northland College 59-56. The two teams were tied at 24 a piece at half-time. The Saints were led by junior center Sara Gregersen who finished with 17 points and 6 rebounds. Senior Becky Smith ended the game with 15 points and 6 rebounds as well. The Saints finished the night assisting on 13 of 22 made field goals, receiving 3 a piece from Meghan Schmidt, Chelsey Stanley, Gregersen and Smith. PC (7-12 overall, 3-6 UMAC) returns to action on Saturday night, February 6th, at 3 pm against conference foe St. Scholastica. Make sure to come out and cheer on the Saints!!! Defense leads to offense leads to Saints win... 1/29 -- The Saints did not let Thursday night's loss to Morris hamper their play on Friday night in Minneapolis, MN, as they took on North Central University and defeated NCU 77-49. The Saints took a 31-22 lead into the break. But exploded for 46 points in the 2nd half to give them the win. PC forced NCU to turn the ball over 35 times, as the Saints finished with 19 steals. The Saints also assisted on 19 of 33 made field goals. On a night when all 9 Saints players scored at least 3 points, Junior Sara Gregersen led the way with 24 points, 9 rebounds and 6 steals. Freshman Mari Mammenga ended with 15 points on 7 of 9 shooting from the field in only 21 minutes of play. Senior Becky Smith filled the stat sheet as she ended with 10 points, 8 assists, 6 rebounds and 5 steals. The Saints(7-11 overall, 3-5 UMAC) return to conference play on Friday, February 5th as they host Northland College. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 pm, and is played in the Strode Center on the Campus of Presentation College. Cold-shooting leads to Saints loss... 1/28 -- On Thursday night the Saints were in action at the University of Minnesota Morris, in Morris, MN. In the two teams first meeting this season, Morris beat PC 74-51 in Aberdeen; Morris was again triumphant in this contest 58-44. Cold shooting from the field was the story of the game for the Saints. PC shot 16-56 (29%) from the field, and also committed 17 turnovers. Junior guard Dana Chalupsky led the Saints with 13 points, including 3-6 from the 3-pt. line. Senior point guard Chelsey Stanley ended the night with 10 points and 6 rebounds. The Saints (6-11 overall, 3-5 UMAC) return to action Friday night as they head to St. Paul, MN, to take on non-conference opponent North Central University. Tip-off scheduled for 5:30 pm. After previous night's loss, Saints hand it to Crown 1/23 -- On Saturday afternoon PC did not let the night's before loss affect their play against Crown. The Saints took on Crown College, in St. Bonifacious, MN and handed the hosts a decisive 68-40 setback. The Saints played a solid first half of basketball and took a 40-22 lead into the half-time break. The team finished the game with 17 assists and 11 steals while forcing Crown to commit 22 turnovers. In a game that all PC players scored, Senior guard Megan Jones led all PC scorers with 14 points. Sara Gregersen recorded her 7th double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Saints (6-10 overall, 3-4 UMAC) return to action on January 28th as the travel to Morris, MN to take on the University of Minnesota Morris. On January 14th, the two teams first meeting, Morris beat PC 51-74 in Aberdeen. The game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Saints lose hard-fought battle at Northwestern... 1/22 -- On Friday night the Saints took on UMAC Conference foe Northwestern College in St. Paul, MN. After the teams played the first 20 minutes, the home team entered the locker rooms with 32-28 lead. The 2nd half didn't bring better results for the Saints as they lost Northwestern 64-72. However, the loss was not due to poor performance. The Saints shot 50% from the field and 44% from the 3-pt line. Junior Sara Gregersen led all PC scorers with 21 points as well as 6 rebounds. Senior point guard Chelsey Stanley had a strong night with 15 points, 6 assists and 5 boards. Senior Becky Smith finished the night with 11 points, 5 assists, and 5 rebounds. Morris too much for Saints... 1/14 -- In the Strode Center on Thursday night the Saints fell to visiting University of Minnesota Morris 51-74. The Saints had a lead for most of the 1st half before letting it slip away, and found themselves down 25-32 at halftime. The 2nd half did not get much better for the Saints as they shot only 30% from the field in the half while Morris shot a blistering 57%. Senior Becky Smith led all scorers with 14 points. Sara Gregersen recorded her 6th double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds. The Saints hit the road next weekend as they head to St. Paul, MN to take on Northwestern College on Jan. 22nd with the game scheduled for 5:30 pm. Efficient offense leads Saints to big win... 1/12 -- In Ellendale, ND the Saints defeated Trinity Bible College 91-32. A confident and fine-tuned offense was the key to the Saints big win. The offensive explosion started in the 1st half as the Saints had 16 assists on 19 field goals made. The Saints not only shared the ball but made sure to reward the good pass, as they converted on 19-34 (56%) field goals, 5-8 (63%) from the 3-pt line, and 5-6 (83%) from the free throw line. All PC players scored at least one point in the first half. Sara Gregersen led all scorers at the half with 14 points. The visiting Saints took a 48-19 lead into the locker room. The Saints did not slow down in the 2nd as they scored 43 more points compared to the hosts 19 to give PC a 91-32 win. The Saints may have been very efficient on the offensive end but much of that offense was produced on the defensive end of the court. Trinity Bible ended the game with 25 turnovers and PC finished with 14 steals. In a game that saw all PC players score at least 6 points, and four players with double figures; Gregersen finished the night with 21 points and 7 rebounds. Freshman guard Lindsey Johnson had a great game finishing with 13 points, 6 rebounds, and 7 assists. Megan Jones was on fire from the 3-pt line going 4-6 for 12 points. Becky Smith was the 4th Saint to have double digits with 10. Meghan Schmidt had a game high 10 rebounds. The Saints return to action on Thursday night in a conference game against the University of Minnesota Morris. This game is at 5:30 pm in the Strode Center located on the campus of Presentation College. This is a big conference game so everyone get your PC gear and come cheer on the SAINTS!!! Saints lose 2nd consecutive conference game... 1/09 -- On Saturday afternoon PC came up 3 points short to conference foe Northland College in Ashland, WI. The Saints saw themselves on the short side of a 30-22 halftime score. However, the Saints did win the second half of the contest but came up short as they lost 57-54. The Saints were led by Senior Becky Smith, who finished with a team-high 18 points along with her 6 rebounds and 4 steals. Junior Sara Gregersen ended the night with her 5th double-double of the season. The Saints post finished with 11 points and a game high 12 rebounds. The Saints also won the battle of the boards 34-31. The Saints (4-8 overall, 2-2 UMAC) return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 12th as they head North to Ellendale, ND to take on Trinity Bible College.
Saints Fall to College of St. Scholastica 1/08 -- In Duluth, MN, the Saints fell 45-63 at the hands of The College of St. Scholastica on Friday night. The first half saw the host team take a 37-27 lead into the locker room at the break. Both teams cooled off in the 2nd half as the Saints only put up 18 points, and the home team notched 26. The Saints struggled shooting all game as the finished 15-52 (28.8%) from the field, including 0-9 from the 3-pt line. PC was also outrebounded 50-32. Sara Gregersen led all scorers with 19 points as well as 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks and 4 steals. The Saints return to action on Saturday at 3:00 pm as they move from Duluth to Ashland, WI to take on Northland College in another conference game. For 2nd time this season, Sara Gregersen awarded... 12/22 -- Sara Gregersen was once again selected by the UMAC as the player of the week. In a loss to Mount Marty last week, Gregersen had 22 points and 10 rebounds for her 4th double-double of the season. She also finished with 2 assists and 3 steals. Congratulations Sara!! Long range shooting downs Saints... 12/15 -- On Tuesday night the Saints traveled to Yankton to take on the Lancers from Mount Marty. Though losing 78-53 the Saints played very well against the NAIA DII #7 nationally ranked Lancers. The Saints found themselves down 30-46 at half after watching the hosts convert 8-17 from the three point line. Junior Sara Gregersen finished the first half leading all scorers with 14 points and 7 rebounds. The 2nd half was much of the same as the Lancers went 5-12 from the 3-pt line to finish the night with 13 three pointers. The Saints shot well from the field for the game but struggled to match the hosts in the 3-pt column as the Saints went 2-7. Gregersen finished with a game high 22 points to go along with 10 rebounds for her 4th double-double of the season. Senior Becky Smith finished with 15 points and eight rebounds. The Saints (4-6) have an extra long break before their next contest. On Friday, January 8th, the Saints will travel to Duluth, MN to take on St. Scholastica for some more UMAC action. Becky Smith's efforts rewarded... 12/15 -- Senior forward Becky Smith was named UMAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week for her efforts in two games last week. In games against North Central University and Black Hills State University, Smith averaged 13 points and 9 rebounds a game. She also tallied 8 assists and 11 steals. Great Job Becky!! Black Hills State too much for Saints... 12/12 -- First half shooting and turnovers led to a Saints loss on Saturday afternoon against Black Hills State University. The visitors came away with a 64-35 victory. After shooting only 23% the Saints found themselves down 29-15 at the half. Though turning the ball over 13 times was a back breaker for the Saints they did out-rebound the visitors 20-17 in the 1st half. The Saints picked up the offense slightly in the 2nd half (35%) but once again turnovers (18) killed the Saints. The Saints finished the game with 31 turnovers. Junior Sara Gregersen led the Saints with 15 points and 11 rebounds for her 3rd double-double of the season. Senior Becky Smith had another solid game finishing with 11 points and 8 rebounds. The Saints return to action on Tuesday, December 15th when they head to Yankton, SD to take on Mount Marty College in another non-conference game. Hot shooting and tenacious defense leads to Saints victory!! 12/10 -- The cold weather outside had zero effect on the Saints shooting Thursday night against North Central University. In the non-conference battle the Saints shot 55% from the field while assisting on 22 of 37 field goals made! Defense was also key as PC caused North Central to turn the ball over 32 times while compiling 20 steals on the night. The 85-27 victory is the 3rd straight for the Saints. Senior Becky Smith had an outstanding night where she nearly compiled at quadruple-double! Smith ended the evening with 15 points, 10 rebounds, 8 steals and 7 assists all within 20 minutes on the court! This was Smith's 3rd double-double of the season. Senior Meghan Schmidt and Junior Dana Chalupsky finished with a game-high 16 points each. Senior guard Chelsey Stanley contributed 13 points and Junior Sara Gregersen pitched in with 11. The Saints return to action on Saturday December, 12th at 3pm in another non-conference game against Black Hills State University. The game is played in the Strode Center on the campus of Presentation College. Come out and cheer on the Saints! Sara Gregersen named UMAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week!!! 12/08 -- Junior Sara Gregersen helped the Saints go 2-0 with victories over Bethany Lutheran and Martin Luther, averaging 16.0 points and 9.5 boards per game. Gregersen shot nearly 40 percent from the floor and swiped seven steals in the two contests. Congratulations Sara! Saints sweep conference opening weekend!! 12/05 -- After an exciting win the night before, the Saints may have had a slight emotional hangover in the first half as they found themselves down 34-30 at the break. Only shooting 30% from the field and losing the battle of the boards (29-20) were the key struggles for the Saints. Junior Sara Gregersen paced the Saints with 10 points in the 1st half. The 2nd half was a different story for the Saints as their shooting and rebounding improved to lead them to a 68-64 victory. Recording her 2nd double-double of the season was Senior Becky Smith who finished with 14 and 13 respectively. Gregersen ended the night with a game high 19 points to go along with 6 rebounds. The Saints (3-4) return to action on Thursday night against non-conference opponent North Central University at 5:30pm in the Strode Center located on the campus of Presentation College. Make sure to come out and cheer on the Saints!!! Saints Win begin conference schedule with exciting overtime win! 12/04 -- On Friday night the Saints hosted conference opponent Martin Luther College for both teams conference opener. In the first half the Saints were led by Sara Gregersen with 10 points. Freshman Mari Mammenga pitched in 8 points as well in the first half. Even though the Saints shot very well from the field in the first half (54%), they found themselves down 37-36 going into the half. The visitors held a demanding 27-12 lead in the rebound column, including 14 offensive rebounds. The Saints "rebounded' in the second half and won the battle of the boards 19-18 to keep themselves in the game. Though, the Saints found themselves down by 2 with 8 seconds remaining in the game. Coach Alaina Benson called a timeout and drew up a play to try and tie the game. The team called on Senior Becky Smith for some late game heroics. Smith found herself with the ball on the wing in the waning seconds, drove to the basket, and finished a spectacular shot as time expired to send the game into overtime tied 67-67. After giving up an early basket in the overtime period the Saints dominated the rest of the period to take the win 77-69. Leading the way for the Saints was Mammenga who finished with a game high 16 points, Mari was 5-6 from the field and 6-7 from the line to total her college career high. Smith finished with 15 points and 9 rebounds. Gregersen ended the game with her 2nd double-double of the season, totaling 13 points and 13 rebounds. Senior Meghan Schmidt ended the evening with 12 points. Saints travel to Sioux Falls for post-Thanksgiving competition. 11/28 -- On the first Saturday after Thanksgiving 2009 Head Women's Basketball Coach Alaina Benson and her team hit the road to take on the University of Sioux Falls in a non-conference game. Maybe still tired from all the good food on Thursday, both teams were sluggish in the 1st half as the Cougars from USF took a 21-18 lead into the half. The 2 teams shot a combined 14-61 from the field in the 1st half (PC 7-28, USF 7-31). The 2nd half was a different story as USF came to life and shot 47% from the field compared to PC's 40%. The visiting Saints were unable to keep the game close as they lost 65-42 when the final whistle blew. Turnovers were an issue for the Saints as they finished the game with 27 compared to only 5 assists. Though undersized again, the Saints continued to rebound very well against a much larger team and finished with a small disadvantage in the rebound column (USF 44, PC 41). Leading Saints was Senior Forward Becky Smith who finished the game with a team high 10 points, as well as a game high 11 rebounds, to give her a double-double! Junior Center Sara Gregersen also finished with 10 rebounds, to go along with her 5 points, 5 steals and 2 blocks. Senior Guard Meghan Schmidt, who played all 40 minutes, finished the game with 9 points and 4 rebounds. The Saints return to action this Friday, December 4th and 5th. Friday will be Saints conference opener as they take on Martin Luther College at 5:30 p.m., and on Saturday against Bethany Lutheran College at 3:oo p.m. Both games will be played in the Strode Center located on the Campus of Presentation College. Come out and cheer on the Saints! Saints earn first win of season in dominant performance over Trinity Bible College. 11/24 -- On Tuesday night the Presentation College Saints Women's Basketball team found their offensive groove as they handed Trinity Bible College an 81-23 loss. After struggling offensively in their last two games, the Saints were able to bust out of there shooting slump as they finished the game with a shooting percentage of 55%. Another positive for the Saints was their ability to not turn the ball over (only 7 for the whole game!) The Saints also shared the ball like a very well-coached team as they had assists on 22 of 34 field goals made. Not only did the Saints have a great assist-turnover ratio but they also were very disruptive on the defensive end as they forced TBC into 23 turnovers! PC also had a 45-23 advantage in rebounds including 18 offensive rebounds! Every Saint was able to score in the game, led by freshman guard Lindsey Johnson with 16 points. Lindsey also had a team high 5 assists. Senior Becky Smith and Junior Sara Gregersen contributed 11 points a piece and freshamn Mari Mammenga pitched in with 10 points. Junior Forward Dana Chalupsky ended with 11 points and 11 rebounds for the double-double! The Saints travel to Sioux Falls on Saturday November 28 to take on the University of Sioux Falls in another non-conference game! Saints lose to Dakota State University in 2009-10 home opener. 11/21 -- On Saturday night the Saints played host to the Trojans from Dakota State University. For the second night in the row, the Saints struggled offensively and found themselves down 46-26 at the break. Despite heating up in the second half the Saints were unable to stop the inside play of the Trojans and lost the game with a final score of 86-61. Junior Center Sara Gregersen finished with a game high 16 points. Senior Becky Smith ended with 8 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists. Senior Meghan Schmidt had a good game with 12 points and 6 rebounds. A bright spot for the Saints was from the play of Freshman guard Lindsey Johnson who finished with 11 points and 4 rebounds coming off the bench. Johnson was the catalyst for the 2nd half run made by the Saints. The Saints (0-3) play host to Trinity Bible College on Tuesday at 5:30 in the Strode Center located on the campus of Presentation Colllege. Saints play well against NSU; come up short. 11/20 -- On Friday night the Presentation College Saints Women's basketball team took on cross-town opponent NCAA Division II opponent Northern State University. Coming in as heavy underdogs, the Saints played hard and with a lot of heart against a much taller NSU women's team. Despite their efforts, the Saints lost 83-51. PC struggled finding the bottom of the net throughout the game as they finished shooting 27% from the field compared to Northern's 43%. The Saints, however, did shoot fairly well from the 3-pt line finishing 7-16 form the arc and had a great night at the line shooting 12-14 from the stripe. Leading the way for the Saints was Jr. Sara Gregersen as she finished the game with a team high 16 points and 14 rebounds, including 8 offensive boards. Playing all 40 minutes was Senior guard Chelsey Stanley who finished with 11 points and 3 assists. Senior Becky Smith was the third Saints to finish with double digits with 10 points. Saints unable to stop Jamestown College in season opener. 11/17 -- On Tuesday night the Saints traveled north to play Jamestown College in a non-conference battle. Last night marked the first game of the season for the Saints and the seventh game of the season for the Jimmie women. The Jimmies had the hot hand in the first half, shooting 55% from the field and 45% from behind the arc. The Saints were not as hot shooting only 20% from the field and found themselves down 41-19 at the half. The second half was a different story as the visiting Saints were able to shoot 41% from the field and 34% from behind the arc as the hosts from Jamestown cooled off to 39% from the field. The Saints shot an outstanding 93% from the free throw line for the game. However, the hotter shooting second half was not enough for the Saints to overcome as they lost the game 84-46. Sara Gregersen had games highs with 17 points and 9 rebounds. Becky Smith finished with 10 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Dana Chalupsky had a good night fininshing with 10 points and 5 rebounds. Though disappointed by the lopsided score, 1st year Head Coach Alaina Benson was proud of her team's effort and ability to come back and have a much better 2nd half of the game. The Saints have another competitive game on Friday night as they take on Northern State University in Wachs Arena at 6 p.m.
