Presentation College Faculty Presents at National Conference
Tom Gilsenan, Assistant Professor of Social Work at Presentation College, was a presenter at the Social Work for Social Justice National Conference, sponsored by the College of St. Catherine and University of St. Thomas School of Social Work. The conference was held June 3 through 6 in St. Paul, MN.
Gilsenan’s topic, “Saints for Social Work,” introduces new techniques for teaching social work by encouraging students to take a broader view of these social leaders. “The students are asked to consider not only what these social work saints have done, but also how they developed their ideas about social justice,” said Gilsenan. He said the goal is to create a deeper understanding of the factors that affected the lives of these heroic leaders.
Gilsenan holds a B.A. in Social Work from the University of Minnesota and an M.S.W from the University of St. Thomas. He is a doctoral candidate at the University of Iowa.
The social work program at Presentation College is one of three social work programs in South Dakota accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Social work courses are offered in Aberdeen and Eagle Butte. A social work completion program is offered in Sioux Falls in collaboration with Kilian Community College.
