Presentation College announces addition of Surgical Technology certificate program
ABERDEEN, S.D. -- Presentation College has announced the addition of a surgical technology certificate program, slated to begin in the fall of 2008. The program will allow students to pursue an in-demand degree in only 12 months.
“This program was added to help fulfill our mission of producing high quality healthcare professionals,” said Nancy Vander Hoek, chair of the Allied Health Department. “Our graduates will be skilled and experienced assets to the surgical community.”
As operating room team members, surgical technicians are responsible for creating and maintaining the sterile field, assisting surgeons during procedures and performing basic patient care, among other duties.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, employment opportunities for surgical technologists are expected to grow more rapidly than other professions in the coming years. Projected statistics show an increase in demand for surgical technologists of 24 percent over the next eight years.
Many of the required courses for the Surgical Technology certificate program are offered online. In addition, the program includes hands-on lab work and two semesters of clinical practicum. Graduates of the program will also have the opportunity to earn an associate degree with the completion of an additional 18 credits.
