Presentation College announces addition of Psychology degree

ABERDEEN, S.D. -- Presentation College has announced the addition of a psychology degree, beginning this fall. Students enrolled in the program will graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree, with an emphasis in Child and Adolescent Psychology, Organizational Psychology, Sport Psychology or General Psychology.

"The focus of the program is to give the student a solid foundation in the field of mental health with an emphasis on the value and dignity of the individual," said Dr. Thom Flamboe, assistant professor of psychology. "As a result, students will be prepared for exciting work in a psychology-related field, or they can continue on to graduate work."

Presentation has offered a psychology minor for several years, as a complement to the nursing and allied health programs. The decision to expand the Psychology minor into a major was a logical extension of Presentation’s commitment to higher education. A psychology minor will still be available to students in other majors.

"The Psychology program will serve as a foundation for understanding human behavior," Flamboe said. "This fits with our mission and the variety of healthcare programs we already offer."

The Child and Adolescent Psychology emphasis will focus on understanding the mental health of children and adolescents and working with them in a variety of settings, including hospitals. Students in the Organizational Psychology track will be prepared for the world of work and the various aspects of mental health and its effects on both the worker and manager.

Sport Psychology’s focal point will be learning to understand the mental side of the athlete and how mental health affects performance. The General Psychology emphasis will provide students with a general orientation to the field of psychology.

Students pursuing the baccalaureate degree will be required to complete an internship in the field before graduation. According to Flamboe, feedback from students has been overwhelmingly positive.

"There is a high demand for the program, and students have a lot of options when they graduate with a psychology degree," Flamboe said. "With our hands-on faculty and small class sizes, this will be a strong program."
