Fall Film Series:
War & Peace
The Presentation College Social Work Department is hosting the fall War and Peace film series at the Red Rooster Coffee House. The series continues with the film My Country My Country. There are a total of four films in the War & Peace series, and the viewings are held the first Wednesday of each month at the Red Rooster, which is located at 202 S. Main Street in Aberdeen.
The War & Peace film playing on November 4, 2009 at 7pm is titled My Country My Country. Working alone in Iraq over eight months, filmmaker Laura Poitras (Flag Wars, POV) creates an extraordinarily intimate portrait of Iraqis living under U.S. occupation. Her principal focus is Dr. Riyadh, an Iraqi medical doctor, father of six and Sunni political candidate. An outspoken critic of the occupation, he is equally passionate about the need to establish democracy in Iraq, arguing that Sunni participation in the January 2005 elections is essential. Yet all around him, Dr. Riyadh sees only chaos, as his waiting room fills each day with patients suffering the physical and mental effects of ever-increasing violence.
The final film in the War & Peace films series, Soldiers of Conscience is showing on December 2nd. The films are presented by the Presentation College Social Work Program in cooperation with POV, the award-winning non-fiction film series from PBS. For more information on the War & Peace films and to watch a trailer, please visit www.pbs.org/pov/discover/?subject=war_peace. Discussion will follow the film and is free to the public.
