Aaron Schultz to host February Lunch and Learn

ABERDEEN, S.D. -- Presentation College Social Work Assistant Professor Aaron Schultz will host a Lunch and Learn on Thursday, Feb. 28 at noon in the Dining Hall at PC. The hour-long event will feature a presentation from Schultz entitled, "Isms, Economics and the Pink Elephant."

While it has been 40 years since explicit discriminatory language has been included in federal statutes, race and gender inequality are still prevalent in American institutions. Schultz will explore the idea that social and economic inequality has replaced the previous notions of racism and sexism in our country. He asserts that Americans today witness prejudice based on economic and social class differences, as well as apparent physical differences.

"The ‘isms’ of today have their roots in our inequitable past and the American stratified class system, which is heavily based on attainable assets and the accumulation of wealth," Schultz said. "For this reason, a candid discussion of race and gender inequality has become the ‘Pink Elephant’ in the room. Open and evident discriminatory practices in America may be a taboo thing of the past, yet what has replaced them is a veiled social system in which class envelopes the characteristics of racism and sexism."

Presentation College’s Lunch and Learn series is held on the last Thursday of each month, and is free and open to the public. Lunch will be available for $5. Please RSVP to the Advancement Office at 606-229-8454 by Monday, Feb. 25 to reserve your seat.
