Presentation College is pleased to announce that the South Dakota Humanities Council has selected PC as one of eight sites to host the 2014 One Book South Dakota tour with award-winning poet, writer, and author, Kathleen Norris.
Dakota: A Spiritual Geography serves as the 2014 One Book for both North Dakota and South Dakota, in honor of the 125th anniversary of their entry into the union. The book was the New York Times Notable Book of the Year and was selected as one of the best books of the year by Library Journal. Norris paints an expansive portrait of the Dakotas and provides loving descriptions of the vast and starkly beautiful landscape, extremes of weather and topography, and townspeople and farmers. The book reveals the contradictions of small town life on the Great Plains.
Norris’s book will be read and discussed by community reading groups across the state; however, Norris will give a special public program on Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at 7 p.m. at the East Suites Commons on the Presentation College Campus. A book signing will take place after Norris’s presentation.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports that, “The Great Plains may never be quite the same after Dakota: A Spiritual Geography…With humor and lyrical grace, [Norris is] at once a pondering visionary and a news reporter covering the essence of what there is to see and touch in a land so vast that it seems more like an ocean than it does earth.”
