PC names mascot SPIRIT!

ABERDEEN, S.D. – After nearly a month on campus and with more than 1,000 name submissions from 21 states, and the District of Columbia, Presentation College has revealed the new mascot’s name as SPIRIT!

The 15-week-old Saint Bernard puppy, bred in Aberdeen, is currently living with a PC staff member and will be present at most PC athletic and college events and will be a permanent presence on the PC campus.

“We have been talking about this (mascot) for over a year,” said Dr. Margaret Huber, college president. “It is an opportunity to create an image, and a symbol related to the Saints that could represent our college and athletic department in a unique and fun way.”

There was more than just the correlation between PC being the Saints and getting a Saint Bernard breed as a mascot.

“A Saint Bernard is a people-oriented dog known for saving lives, as well as being a friendly and strong animal,” added Huber. “We just felt that the characteristics of the breed are a perfect match for the college’s mission and also embodied the nature of the Sister’s mission.”

After the more than 1,000 suggestions the mascot naming panel decided on the name Spirit.

“The name Spirit just felt like the right choice because of the direct link of having school spirit, but also because of the many other connotations of the meaning of the word,” said Huber.

Twelve people submitted the winning name of Spirit and will receive gift bags for their role in the naming process.

“We were pleased at how much community support we received once we announced we were moving ahead with a live mascot and want to thank everyone, especially those who submitted the winning name for their support,” added Huber. “We hope that everyone will come out and support our Saints athletic teams and meet our new addition soon.”
